Possible directions for development include extending the use of technology in language learning; renewal of the programs in French and German; expanding non-language course offerings in areas such as linguistics, literature in translation, and cultural studies; and increasing departmental involvement in USD's international programming, including study abroad, student exchange, and faculty-led programs. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=Default><span lang=EN-US style='font-size:11.5pt;color:windowtext'>Candidates are expected to have a PhD in Spanish (or the equivalent) and native or near-native fluency in Spanish, with preference given to candidates capable of teaching in more than one language. A scholarly record consistent with appointment as an associate professor is required. To be appointed at the rank of full professor, candidates must have established a national reputation of outstanding scholarship. Administrative experience is preferred. All department faculty are expected to have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=Default><span lang=EN-US style='font-size:11.5pt;color:windowtext'>The Department of Modern Languages offers the BA degree and minors in French, German, and Spanish, with additional instruction in Lakota and linguistics.
